Car Tune-Up Winter Check List

Winter may be beautiful to some with the white snow covering the fields, but this harsh winter weather can be terrible on your car if you have not tuned up your vehicle and have it ready for these cold winter months.

The major things you should check before the cold north wind blows includes:

Brakes – Your brakes should be equalized so the car does not pull to one side. If your brakes are uneven, you will be in danger of skidding on icy roads more easily.

Cooling System – The cooling system does not have to be checked every year, but if it has been awhile, you have the cooling system flushed with a quality chemical cleaner. Always put in fresh anti-freeze every year and check containers, hoses, belts, thermostat, and pressure caps, as well.

Battery and electrical system – cold weather can do a number on your car’s battery. If the battery is a few years, you should have it checked. Always ensure that the connectors are clean from corrosion and are tight.

Engine – Before those winter months, it is always a good idea to have a diagnostic check up of the engine done. If it is close to time for a tune up, it should be done before winter. You do not want such problems as worn spark plugs, faulty wiring, or a sticking choke to cause you to have trouble starting your car on those cold winter mornings.

Exhaust system – You should inspect for carbon monoxide leaks in the muffler and tail pipe system. This can be very dangerous in the winter when car windows are rolled up and the fumes can enter the car.

Heaters, defrosters and wipers – Windshield wipers should be changed to winter wiper blades and cold weather washer fluid should be used as well. You should also inspect your heater and defroster.

Oil and filter – it is a great idea to have an oil change before winter hits. Dirty oil can cause all kinds of problems. While you are at it, check other filters such as transmission, air, and fuel.

Tires – Snow tires are best for winter months since they were created just for driving on snow. You should always have snow tires on all four tires. In Quebec, you have to have snow tires on all tires.
